Rotary Last Week

Last week Rotarians gathered to provide lunch, school supplies and books to children who participate in the city's summer programming as well as student participants in the Boys and Girls Club of Youngstown.  About 150 students took advantage of the beautiful weather to enjoy hot dogs, hamburgers, beans, macaroni and cheese, chips and drinks.  Each child received a bag full of school supplies and books to read.  There were so many books that each child was able to get up to four and there were still a lot left over.   We were rewarded by the miles of smiles and happy faces.

In true Rotarian spirit, we were the featured sponsor for the American 250th Celebration on Saturday August 8 (postponed from July 5 due to weather). Thank you to the Rotarians and family members who volunteered, helping make Ignite the Night a huge success. The main event was an outdoor performance of the Youngstown Symphony orchestra - led by conductor Eric Ochsner.  The piece de resistance was a fireworks display set to orchestra music at the end. Attendance was over 5,000 guests, with lawn chairs and picnic blankets filling the Youngstown Foundation Amphitheatre. Large groups were able to enjoy the fireworks from nearby Wean Park and the Flea. The program would not have been possible without several sponsors, the full commitment of the City of Youngstown and the JAC and Stambaugh Auditorium, the orchestra and staff.  It was a model of true collaboration!!!

Celebrating National Honey Bee Weekend

The Rotary Club of Youngstown has been invited to take part in National Honey Bee Weekend, a special celebration of bees, pollinators and the important role they play in healthy gardens and thriving communities.

Hosted by Sweet Memories Vintage Tees and Candy, the weekend will feature flower-arranging demonstrations, honey and food samples, local vendors, and family-friendly activities celebrating the importance of bees and pollinators.

Rotarians will have the opportunity to host a Rotary Club of Youngstown / Operation Pollination educational table on Saturday, Sunday, or both days. Volunteers are needed to help share information about Operation Pollination, educate visitors about protecting pollinators, and showcase Rotary—while also providing an opportunity to sell Operation Pollination T-shirts and connect with potential new members.

The event is also a chance for the club to support local, women-owned businesses. Mandi, owner of Sonshine Blooms, is a potential new member, while Linda Barton, owner of Sweet Memories Vintage Tees and Candy, is transferring to our club from the Girard-Liberty Rotary Club.

Linda is also planning a pollinator site next to her building, complete with a mural and selfie butterfly wings. Let’s show our support for this exciting addition to the community!
