As he celebrates 30 years as a Rotarian, Reid Schmutz reflects on how he developed his deep commitment to his home community and our local university -- despite not being a Penguin alum himself.

What brought you here, or kept you here? Family and job
Education: Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics, Brown University
Occupation: Retired since 2011, after 25 years with Standard Slag (advancing from lab technician to Vice President of Operations) and 22 years as President of the Youngstown State University Foundation.
Who is in your family circle? Wife, Judy (they grew up across the street from one another and attended The Rayen School); three children; 8 grandchildren.
When you are not working, how do you like to spend your time? Golfing, reading, enjoying family.
Why did you join Rotary? Jane Hahn asked.
Why do you remain a Rotarian? I enjoy the good works and fellowship.
Which Rotary Project resonates with you and your understanding of our community's needs? Operation Warm.
What does Rotary's motto "Service Above Self" mean to you? Give of time and talents to the community.
What would you be doing on Wednesdays if you didn't attend the weekly luncheon meeting? I’d be golfing or attending other meetings.
Which type of Rotary socials do you prefer - black tie affairs or casual attire? Casual.
What do you think of Scott Schulick's Rotary pants, and would you wear a pair? No, I would not, but I have Christmas pants.
What's a story of yours that you don't get to tell often enough? I attended Harding Elementary School, and what we do there is doubly meaningful. [Rotary] and a group of university volunteers put up the playground behind the school. It was lots of work, and very rewarding! I believe it is still there today.
