The diverse skills of Rotarians benefit clubs and communities. RCY is fortunate to count George Nelson among its members. His skills as a writer and photographer quickly benefitted the club, as George led efforts to create member recruitment videos to post on social media. Read on for details of his own recruitment story.

Name: George Nelson

Years in Rotary: 4

Resident of: Niles

Hometown: Niles, 25 years; Youngstown, 31 years.

What brought you here, or kept you here? Family and opportunities in my field.

Education: BA in Journalism, Youngstown State University.

Occupation: Journalist and Assignment Editor, The Business Journal, Youngstown.

Who is in your family circle? Wife, Ada; daughter, Beverly; son, Curt.

Do you have any pets?  If so, what are their names and what are they like? We have four cats. Lilly, Watson, Mercury and Selina. Of the four, Watson is the one I probably get along with best. He seems to be the smartest of the four. Certainly, he is the least clumsy.

When you are not working, how do you like to spend your time? Photography, reading, watching television (split between political news and science fiction/fantasy).

Why did you join Rotary? I was invited to a Rotary event by Ellie Platt. I demurred when someone suggested I join because I felt I didn't have the time to devote to it. I became more interested in wanting to do more to help my community and later found myself inspired by a friend's example to make the time. Then I joined.

What does Rotary's motto "Service Above Self" mean to you? Putting others needs above our own needs or desires.

What would you be doing on Wednesdays if you didn't attend the weekly luncheon meeting? Honestly, I’d probably be on a political conference call.

Which type of Rotary socials do you prefer - black tie affairs or casual attire? Casual.

A Rotary tradition is to have sing-alongs during meetings.  Would you ever lead us in a song? Do we really have that great of a need to clear a room?

What do you think of Scott Schulick's Rotary pants, and would you wear a pair? I don't think anyone could carry them off like he does.
