We had the opportunity to hear from Sr. Ann McManamon, H.M. of the Dorothy Day House on how the organization is helping to feed those in need during Covid-19.

To support this important work, Rotary Club of Youngstown President Samantha Turner presented Sr. McManamon with a $1,500 check for the purchase, preparation, and packaging of food for takeout for its clients.

Sr. Ann McManamon spoke of the Mission of the Dorothy Day house and how they have operated during the Covid crisis. The house had initially closed for 4-6 six weeks in the beginning of the pandemic but slowly began to re-open. Ms. McManamon emphasized the importance of their mission that was echoed by when Pope Francis spoke to congress in 2015: "

In his historic address to Congress on Thursday, Pope Francis invoked four Americans who, through “hard work and sacrifice -- some at the cost of their lives,” were able to build “a better future” and shape fundamental American values: Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr., Thomas Merton and Dorothy Day.

“A nation can be considered great when it defends liberty as Lincoln did, when it fosters a culture which enables people to ‘dream’ of full rights for all their brothers and sisters, as Martin Luther King sought to do; when it strives for justice and the cause of the oppressed, as Dorothy Day did by her tireless work, the fruit of a faith which becomes dialogue and sows peace in the contemplative style of Thomas Merton.” (LA Times, https://www.latimes.com/nation/la-na-pope-visit-four-americans-20150924-htmlstory.html)

Ms. McManamon estimates they feed 70 people during their meal services.
