Our Weekly Meetings

Last week's meeting:  Remember the first trip you ever made to Washington, DC? Was it in elementary to middle school? Did you come back feeling inspired? Well, Chris Stanley, a history teacher at Martin Luther King Elementary School, certainly was. Today, civic engagement and public service are important to him. The Columbus area transplant believes one way to spark that same interest in young people is exposure to the workings of government. His passion for this has led him to start Classroom 2 Capitol, a non-profit organization to fund educational trips to Washington, D.C. for students in underserved communities.
During the 2019-20 school year, Stanley helped organize a D.C. trip for local middle schoolers, but the COVID-19 pandemic canceled it. Now his goal is a spring 2022 D.C. trip for students which students and their families won’t be burdened by the cost. To cover two busloads of students and chaperones, lodging, meals, events, and incidentals, it will cost about $50,000.  Rotarian and YCSD CEO Justin Jennings has secured $22,500 of that funding. Learn more about these efforts here

A Peek at our History
By: Dr. Barbara Brothers
Our Rotary Club recently were the lucky recipients of a collection of our own history Linda Ramsdell, granddaughter of Past President Robert W. Ramsdell (1943-44), donated her grandfather’s scrapbook. This vintage piece has numerous articles from The Youngstown Vindicator on our Club's activities during that period until Ramsdell was promoted and moved out of the area at the end of 1945.
Frequent mention is made of the Crippled Children’s Home-- our signature project that went on to become Easter Seals -- Articles mention items needed there, and there are photos of the Annual Christmas Party we hosted for the children. We met at the Hotel Pick Ohio and at Tippecanoe Country Club during those years, so it is only natural that we are frequently mentioned in the renowned Esther Hamilton’s column, as well. The scrapbook will soon be passed on to the Mahoning Valley Historical Society for safekeeping.

June 1,1925: Ninety-nine members of the Rotary Club of Youngstown had a 100 percent attendance during the past month.

RI Focus on Youth: Interact & Rotaract

Rotary International has created a way for us to support our community's youth and, in fact, nuture future Rotarians, through two programs: Interact & Rotaract.

INTERACT: Created for young leaders ages 12 to 18, this group's name stands for "INTERnational ACTion." The goal is for young people to spread fellowship and international understanding through a wide array of service activities. Club membership varies greatly. They can draw from the student body of a single school or from two or more schools in the same community. As one of RI's fastest-growing programs, Interact has more than 14,911 clubs in 145 countries with more than 342,953 young people are involved.

Rotaract: Created for 18 to 30 year olds and targeted locally to YSU students, this branch of Rotary has a strong social aspect. Many clubs create awareness or fundraise through social opportunities such as trivia night, walk-a-thons, happy hour, and different fun events. Meetings are regularly held at a convenient and casual place, making for a great environment to meet like minded people. Rotaract provides unique opportunities that assist its members in becoming the business and professional leaders of tomorrow. Worldwide more than 210,000 individuals are in 9,100 clubs covering 170 countries.

Local clubs like ours serve as sponsors to provide support and guidance. Our clubs at Ursuline, Mooney, Youngstown Christian and Chaney all need help coming back from the pandemic year of no programming.   At the minimum, these youth clubs are asked to complete at least two community service projects. If you are interested in getting involved, reach out to incoming president Josh and let him know!
