This month Rotary International has asked us to focus on our dedication to fighting and preventing disease in our community. Explore this topic via their website at  https://www.rotary.org/en/our-causes/fighting-disease

"The idea of the Family of Rotary is a simple one, and one that we celebrate every December during Family Month.  Every Rotarian is part of the Rotary Family – but our family is much larger than just our 1.2 million members. The Family of Rotary includes every one of the men, women and children involved in our work: spouses  and children of our members, Rotary Foundation program participants and alumni, and all who are part of our programs in the tens of thousands of Rotary communities around the world." Past RI President John Kenny

During this special time of year, we all need to keep our families in mind and celebrate by including them in our Rotary activities. Let's include our children and spouse/partners in our Christmas celebrations while staying safe. When we have our special events for the holidays, let's invite those close to us to participate, virtually if necessary. Ask them to join in our festivities, collect items for the needy or simply attend that special holiday event that occurs this time of year.

As for the Heart of America, we are thankful for the service each of you provides and appreciate the fellowship created by the activities in which you participate. Let's all continue those efforts in advancement of our Rotary ideals.

On a final note, we wish you the Happiest of Holidays, the Safest of Seasons and, as said in the lyrics of The Christmas Song"And so I'm offering this simple phrase, to kids from one to ninety-two, although it's been said many times, many ways, MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU."

FROM THE LITTLE FREE LIBRARY COMMITTEE

Elayne Bozick, Frank Kishel, and Deb Flora

We got an amazing surprise this holiday season: there are now Little Free Library book-sharing boxes on all seven continents! Dr. Russell Schnell recently established a little library at a research observatory at the South Pole. Unsurprisingly, books with colorful photos or tropical scenes are popular among the scientists there.

So far, the Rotary Club of Youngstown has contributed a total of 28 Little Free Libraries to our community — with another soon to arrive on President Samantha’s block.

Thank you to all of our stewards and volunteers especially those who have dug holes; Frank for building and mounting libraries to posts, and Troy for attaching dog hooks so their “walkers” can find a book without having a dislocated shoulder! 😁
