This month Rotary International has asked us to celebrate the wonderful work of the Rotary Foundation and consider how the Club and we as individuals can help. Explore this topic with us at our meeting Wednesday at noon at MVR
or virtually via Zoom.

Last Week's Meeting

Trina Williams, the founder of Fresh Winds Catering and our Club's newest member spoke to the group about her challenging path to entrepreneurship. Raised on Youngstown's southside -- an area she colorfully described as one of the city's toughest -  she began creating gourmet egg rolls and turned them into her own business in 2015. Like many local food entrepreneurs, Williams uses the Common Wealth Kitchen Incubator on Elm Street and has added many selections to her now-famous chicken fried rolls. Her harrowing story of drug dealer-to-businesswoman is told best in her own words. Learn more about it in a recent interview with Mahoning Matters here

Coat Distribution Day
November 18, 2020
Everyone's favorite project of the year might be a little different this year, but we certainly aren't letting COVID stop us! The annual coat distribution day is Wednesday, November 18 from 2- 5 pm in the Harding Elementary School parking lot on Cordova St, on Youngstown's Northside. We will be orchestrating a drive-through distribution to coincide with the Harding meal distribution. Tents will be set up in the parking lot under which we will fit students with their new winter coat. The Committee is seeking volunteers to make it happen! Contact Scott Schulick or Dave Stillwagon by emailing youngstownrotary@sbcglobal.net

INSIDE ROTARY MAGAZINE

One idea changes a village
By Barbara Brothers
You will be truly amazed by the work of Rotary as you read the story “The Road to Piyali Junction” (p. 30).  Supporting the project are Rotary Clubs in India and in the United States.
This story begins as a 60th birthday-inspired idea of Deepa Biswas Willingham, a past president of the Rotary Club of Santa Ynez Valley, California (and a past governor of District 5240). Born in Kolkata, India, she promised that someday she would help the poor children that she saw from her own middle-class windows.
After joining Rotary and sharing her idea, things began to happen quickly. Willingham established PACE (Promise of Assurance to Children Everywhere) Universal, a 501(c)(3) dedicated to empowering girls and women through education. The nonprofit opened PACE Learning Center in 2003 with 25 girls. Since then the involvement has expanded into the nearby village to include computer equipment, a school bus, programs for clean water, adult literacy, and job training, and other improved facilities:  “The average daily income in Piyali has jumped from $1 a day to nearly $5 a day and major strides have been made against child abuse and sex trafficking."
This story, like all issues of The Rotary, expand our knowledge of the places in which Rotarians are at work and of the variety of professions and work that others do that are essential to our well being. We encourage you to make time to read it.

Your Fellow Rotarian

Stephen DiPaolo
Compiled by Debora Flora

Our Club Communications Committee envisioned this feature as a way for Rotarians to become better acquainted with one another. Stephen DiPaolo is a perfect case for this! He joined us a few months before the pandemic changed our social interactions making it much more difficult for many of us to get to know him. Here is the profile of a young Rotarian with a track record of community service, the soul of a musician, and the hands of a carpenter.

STAY INVOLVED & BE REWARDED

COVID has been tough on our fellowship opportunities for sure. However, we know that when we join in the meeting YOU are more likely to get involved. To make it even more attractive, we have a challenge for you: Attend every meeting this month -- in person or virtually -- and be part of a drawing for Dinner4Two at Prima!

Thanks to all of you Rotarians who joined in our 2nd Annual Pints vs Polio. We raised more than $342. Those funds will be matched by the Youngstown Rotary Foundation, then matched by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation resulting in a total donation to the RI Polio Project $1,392.86. Great work!

Our District receives Rotary Foundation District Designated Funds each year. This approximately $50K is used to partner with a number of local and international projects by providing small sums as seed-money toward larger Rotary Foundation Global GrantsWhat a difference we can make in the world through these projects! Learn more about our efforts to help the village of Oholi, India HERE
During the past five years, District 6650 has raised more than $200,000 for The Rotary Foundation to do “Good in the World.”  This year District Governor Linda Henderson is adding a new contest to the annual Paul Harris Fellow Challenge with a new promo called Double Your DonationIt will allow donors of $100 or more to GIFT their matching Foundation Points to another Rotarian in their Club. You both receive the donor credit toward your first or next Paul Harris Fellow level! In mid-November, all Rotarians in the District will be receiving a letter further explaining this option.
