Rotary This Week

How can RCY’s investment in dozens of Little Free Libraries also support Operation Pollination? Rotarian Mary Anne Rishebarger of Baltimore, MD will show us how. Rishebarger is program director of the U.S. Monarch Sister Schools Program (MSSP), which assists students and teachers in planting habitat gardens for Monarch butterflies and other pollinators and provides students valuable hands-on STEM learning experiences that connect them with nature. Her club is installing Little Free Libraries at Rotary-supported pollinator native gardens.

Also this week, RCY’s 107th Anniversary Party & Paul Harris Induction will be at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 10, at Youngstown Country Club, 1402 Country Club Drive, Youngstown 44505. The reservation deadline has passed, and no payments will be accepted at the door. Business attire is recommended.

Last week’s speaker

Tucked into a space above Whistle and Keg in downtown Youngstown is the custom tailor shop Private Stash Atelier. Owned and curated by Joseph Guerrieri Private Stash Atelier offers appointments with tailors for men’s made-to-order clothing, style consultations, and alterations. Private Stash will also make suiting for women.

Influenced by a family of entrepreneurs, Joe left his home in the Mahoning Valley nine years ago and set out for Los Angeles. He came to his current trade in a roundabout way, working in LA as a DJ, and eventually starting a band. It was his work as a valet, however, that started Joe on the road to fashion. As a valet, he had a lot of free time, and during his down time got involved in creating hats, becoming known in hip-hop circles as the “hat guy”. Some of his creations were worn by hip-hop celebrities.

Sensing that fashion might be his niche, Joe chose his next steps wisely. He was put on with a pattern maker, where he sourced fabric and observed the process of creating clothing. After six months, he decided to give it a try and bought a sewing machine. He was able to design enough pieces to create a full collection and even met a buyer from Barney’s who was interested in his creations. Building on that success, he got a job in retail to learn the business aspects of fashion, and was eventually asked to take over the store’s other retail location that was failing. Joe reinvented the store and restored it to profitability.

It wasn’t long after that, however, that COVID hit, prompting Joe’s return to Ohio. Upon his return, he was able to work out a deal to purchase fabric to manufacture men’s suits, and Private Stash Atelier was born.

The shop is appointment-only, and is set up to have a relaxing, casual atmosphere. Suits are made-to-measure, or “bespoke”, which is clothing that is designer inspired, down to the fabric and tailoring. Joe brought along several styles of suits to display and an overcoat, all impeccably styled.
Joe’s future plans for the shop include a cigar bar where patrons can relax with a glass of wine or bourbon. In closing, Joe offered a tip – always have a pocket square in your suit jacket!

SMARTS and the Rotary Club of Youngstown Present Spring Arts Festival @ Youngstown City Schools “Operation Pollination”

Contest Deadline: TBD Contest Theme: Operation Pollination is a collaborative initiative created by Rotary International to inform and address the decline of species that promote pollination.

The Rotary Club of Youngstown wishes to engage students in the Youngstown City School District to create original art that educates the public on the risks associated with a decline of pollinators and how to promote habitats to foster pollination and create more pollinators. Find more information here: https://operationpollination.net/ Spring Arts Festival.

Contest winners will be selected at the Spring Arts Festival as students demonstrate their art live and through a visual art gallery for judges. Teacher Guidelines: SMARTS will prepare a multi-disciplinary package via Google Drive for English Language Arts teachers in three grade categories to teach content preparing students to create art for submission to this contest. Each package comes with a unit plan, resources, and submission guidelines that adhere to the rubric judges will use for scoring. After teaching the unit, students can create original art in any of the five arts disciplines – visual art, music, dance, theater, or creative writing – for submission to the contest.

Contact: For questions about this contest, please contact Councilwoman Samantha Turner or SMARTS President Becky Keck, bkeck@smartsartschool.org, 330-574-2787.

Call to Action

The five Rotary districts in Ohio are in a competition to provide handmade blankets to children in foster care and other youth in need. The statewide Rotary goal is to donate 1,600 blankets to My Very Own Blanket, a volunteer organization in Westerville that seeks to provide comfort and security to 30,000 foster children this year.

Rotarians have many ways to participate, as follows:

Donate a quilt or knitted/crocheted blanket, whether you work alone or with a quilt guild or knitting group. Purchase a Blanket Tag to be sewn on your blanket. Sign the Blanket Tag with your club’s name so it receives credit.

Purchase a fleece blanket kit for $10 to get all you need to make a blanket for your club project. When ordering select your district (6650) and put your club name in the Comments box. Sign the Blanket Tag with your club’s name.

Sponsor a blanket. Donate $10 or more to sponsor a blanket kit that will be made by other Rotarians.

The district that donates the most blankets per capita, based on membership of each district as of July 1, 2021, will win the contest.

See President-Elect Sharon Letson for more information.
