This month Rotary International has asked us to focus on our dedication to fighting and preventing disease in our community. Explore this topic with us at our meeting Wednesday at noon at MVR
Last Week's Review: Justin Jennings wants to be put out of a job. He was appointed as Youngtown City Schools CEO in August of 2019 and has been working hard to improve the quality of education for students and even parents ever since. If he achieves his goals, he says, there will be no need for his position – and he would be happy about it! He detailed current efforts and expressed his gratitude to President Samantha and the Club for their efforts to make sure every YCSD student has technology and Wi-Fi service this year during remote learning. This Week's Speaker: Assistant Director of YSU's Academy for Urban Scholars Bryant Youngblood will be our speaker. A graduate of the Virginia Military Institute and currently a YSU master's student, he recently was the moderator for the Mahoning Matters public forum “Racism as a Public Health Crisis in the Valley” and will speak to us about race, education, and the Mahoning Valley Fatherhood Coalition. INSIDE ROTARY MAGAZINE
Where We Have Been
by Dr. Barbara Brothers
Rotary is about making a difference both through our individual and our club actions. Featured in the November issue is Xavier Ramey of Chicago who addressed the 2018 Toronto International Convention with “a message of reconciliation and a call for urgent action.” Learn from his words and work on how to “cultivate a diverse equitable, and inclusive culture in which people from underrepresented groups have greater opportunities to participate as members and leaders" by reading the full story here
This story, like all issues of Rotary, expand our knowledge of the places in which Rotarians are at work and of the variety of professions and work that others do that are essential to our well being. We encourage you to make time to read it.
Your Fellow Rotarian
Scott Schulick
Compiled by Debora Flora
Surely you know Scott Schulick as a successful businessman, a past president of Rotary Club of Youngstown, and past president of Rotary District 6650. It’s what you don’t know that may surprise you. How much does he love Youngstown? How did his first job prepare him for his career? And what is the story behind his iconic Rotary khakis?
Any objections, please inform the board within 10 days of publication.
CONGRATULATIONS!!!
Rotarian Maureen Drummond has won a drawing for Dinner4Two at the cozy Prima Cucina Italiana in Downtown Youngstown! Her name was selected as part of a drawing of those who attended every meeting last month -- in person or virtually. Mangia Maureen!
COVID has been tough on our fellowship opportunities for sure. Always be looking for ways to connect with your fellow Rotarians!
WINTER BREAK
We are taking a Winter Break from meetings during the month of December. Next week, December 9, will be our last meeting until the new year. Stay connected with your fellow Rotarians via our social media platforms.
With a heavy heart, but a sense of reality, Barb Loudon, RYLA District 6650 RYLA Conference Coordinator, has announced that RYLA 2021 will NOT be able to be held in this Rotary year. This unique youth retreat would be impossible to recreate with the kind of fellowship she wants given the restrictions of the pandemic. On an up note: dates for RYLA 2022 have been secured! Mark your calendars for February 25, 26, 27, 2022 at the Grand Resort (formerly the Avalon Inn).
During the past five years, District 6650 has raised more than $200,000 for The Rotary Foundation to do “Good in the World.” This year District Governor Linda Henderson is adding a new contest to the annual Paul Harris Fellow Challenge with a new promo called Double Your Donation. It will allow donors of $100 or more to GIFT their matching Foundation Points to another Rotarian in their Club. You both receive the donor credit toward your first or next Paul Harris Fellow level!
