This Week's Meeting

RCY will take a field trip this Wednesday to Camp Stambaugh, 3712 Leffingwell Road, Canfield, 44406, for a check presentation ceremony. Beerfest proceeds have enabled RCY to give a $22,000 grant to the Great Trail Council of the Boy Scouts of America to repair and restore the functionality of the camp’s outdoor pool. It is the same pool that was installed 60 years ago with RCY’s support.

Members will gather at noon Wednesday at the [Canfield] Rotary Cabin at Camp Stambaugh for lunch and the check presentation, then take a short walk to the pool area.

If you haven’t already sent your RSVP, then President Josh Prest needs to hear from you TODAY (Monday, May 23) to give the caterer an accurate count. Email him at jprest91@gmail.com.

RCY will resume its weekly meetings at Wick Park Pavilion on June 1.

Also this week, the RCY social hour known as Beers, Cheers & Gears will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 26, at West Side Bowl, 2617 Mahoning Ave., Youngstown, 44509. Look for the large murals and bowling-pin decor on the outside of this cool bowling alley/concert venue/bar-restaurant. Parking is available on the sides of the building and behind it.

Last Week's Meeting

RCY recognized three local heroes during its annual Safety Service Day program on May 18.

Youngstown Police Chief Carl Davis introduced Officer Joshua Rivers, who received YPD’s Award of Valor for demonstrating courage and bringing honor to his department. Rivers was patrolling the North Side on March 20 when he saw a man with a gun outside of a dollar store on Belmont Avenue. Concerned for the safety of adults and children in the vicinity, Rivers approached the man.He fled on foot, with Rivers in pursuit. The man fired his gun at Rivers, but Rivers did not return fire. The man also broke into the home of an elderly resident before he was apprehended by Rivers. “This dangerous felon was taken into custody without danger to others,” Chief Davis said.

Youngstown Fire Captain Courtney Kelly is a firefighter, paramedic and lead instructor of the certified Ohio firefighter program at Choffin Career Center. “There is nothing she won’t do for citizens,” Fire Chief Barry Finley said. “She makes my department better.” He cited the growth and elevation of the training program, because students are passing their exams on the first try and becoming candidates for the next generation of city firefighters.

Youngstown City Health Commissioner Erin Bishop introduced honoree Golie Stennis, whose work as minority health director includes supporting maternal health. Golie joined the department as a student intern and is known for her enthusiasm in all aspects of her job, Bishop said.

Rotarian Suzanne Fleming coordinated the awards ceremony. Well done, Suzanne!

Athena Awards

Two Rotarians were nominees for the Athena Award, which recognizes professional women for outstanding achievements in their careers and commitments to community service. The annual awards dinner, which was May 19 at Waypoint 4180 banquet hall in Canfield, is sponsored by the Youngstown-Warren Regional Chamber and The Vindicator. Congratulations to Aimee Fifarek, who is executive director of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, and Aundrea Cika Heschmeyer, President of Marquee Creatives strategic communications and special events firm.

Highway Litter Collection
Civic-minded Rotarians met Saturday morning, May 21, at the former CVS drug store above the YSU campus to collect trash along the ramps to and from the Madison Avenue Expressway. The service project was coordinated by Sharon Letson and Steve Kristan and promoted on Youngstown CityScape social media. Thank you to all participants for sprucing up a gateway to downtown.

RCY’s European Connection

While President Josh was traveling in Europe, he visited the Rotary Club of Krakow last week. The speaker was a woman from the Rotary Club of Kyiv in Ukraine who shared her experiences of going to Poland as a refugee. She shared what life is like now and what it could be like when she returns to Ukraine.

President Josh presented a flag from RCY to the Krakow club. Also making the trip was Josh’s friend Ryan, a Youngstown native and current member of Rotary in Dallas, Texas.

Updated Foundation Bylaws

The board has adopted new by-laws for the Youngstown Rotary Foundation. They are attached here for your review and within the by-laws, a new board is being created for the Foundation. Club members will be needed to join this board. Nominations will be approved by the end of June during the last board meeting for the 2021-2022 Rotary year.

We will need three at-large Past President members and three at-large non-Past President members. They will be for various lengths of the terms since we will have to stagger terms during the initial years of the board, but the terms are set for three years. All details are in the attachment.

Please submit nominations to President Josh by June 8.

Operation Pollination Crosses the Line!

Ray Stewart and his partner Kate

On Thursday, May 19, 2022, members of the Rotary Club of Youngstown, accompanied by friends and supporters from the community, entered unfamiliar Rotary territory known as IR District 6600 in northwest Ohio. Their mission was to meet with the Rotary Club of Lorain, Ohio to talk about Operation Pollination and how their club members can expand on the work they have already been doing.

Upon arrival they were greeted with lunch, camaraderie, and an ice cream desert. followed by a walk-and-tour to the Lorain pollinator site on the shores of Lake Erie.

Ray Stewart, a member of e-club 6600, joined the five central Ohio interlopers - in person. The Youngstown crew, learning that he had been dropped off with no way back to Amhurst, delivered him safely home.  There they were offered fresh squeezed lemonade, cookies, and a tour of Ray's beautiful gardens. Before leaving everyone received two varieties of milkweed seeds, and two varieties of heirloom tomatoes.

After a day of high (sugar content) adventure half of the RCY member-and-friends team snuck back into District 6650 - just in time for dinner!

No Mow May

8 Reasons to Let Your Lawn Grow for a Month

When it comes to spring yard work, what if you could do more by doing less? By participating in No Mow May, you will spend less time, money, and energy on your lawn while helping to improve the planet.

First popularized in 2019 in the United Kingdom, No Mow May has taken root here in the United States. In 2020, Appleton, Wisconsin, became the first state in the country to adopt the practice in which you allow your lawn to grow throughout the month of May without mowing, watering, or fertilizing. Now, several communities are taking part in the effort.

No Mow May began to help bees and other pollinators, but there is more to it than that. Keep reading to learn why you should take a break from lawn care for a month.
