President's Column from President Scott
I remember my mother taking my sister and I to "story time" at the west side library on Mahoning Avenue and signing up to get my first library card, a green paper card with my named typed on it by the librarian at the circulation desk.  My sister's favorite book was Leo Lionni's "Little Blue and Little Yellow," and mine was Crockett Johnson's "Harold and the Purple Crayon," a copy of which I just purchased for my new nephew, Henry.  I think we might even have had one of our birthday parties there.  Why do I remember this?  Because libraries and particularly, the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County have been such an important part of the fabric of our community.  Our member and library director Heidi Daniel shared a glimpse of why our library system remains relevant in a world full of new technologies.  In fact, it seems the library is even more relevant today than ever.  Heidi reminds us that March is literacy month.  I'm sure grateful I was fortunate to learn to read at an early age...the library was a big part of that.  If you haven't been to the library in a while, make a visit and check out a book!

Rockin' Race 2014
Rotary Club of Youngstown to sponsor our Second Annual Rockin’ Race for Cancer with the students of Harding Elementary School on Wednesday, May 28, 2014, 12:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. at The Rayen Stadium on Cordova Avenue.  This is a fundraiser to support the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center at St. Elizabeth (JACBCC) with 100% of all dollars raised going directly to benefit the women of our valley.

The event will kick-off on Wednesday, May 7 from 2:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. during an all-school assembly in the Harding School cafeteria. Rotarians are encouraged to attend.  Representatives from JACBCC will present a short educational program with remarks from a survivor and Youngstown Rotarians will bring greetings.  Following the assembly, the students will receive sealed slotted can banks to collect donations in support of this cause.  The banks will feature the new 100 year logo of Youngstown Rotary, the Harding Mascot and the JACBCC logo along with our Rockin’Race logo from last year.  If you would like to reserve a bank to place in your office or facility for donations, please notify Frank Kishel at 330 720-6328 or abiinspect@aol.com The order for the banks will be placed the first of April.  The banks will be due back to the school on Friday, May 23. We will need volunteers to help with opening all the banks (electric can openers), counting and recording funds.  Details of this part of the project will follow as soon as arrangements have been made.

Please reserve two dates on your calendars: May 7 for the Rockin’ Race Kick-off and May 28 for race day.  We’ll be in touch as volunteer opportunities develop.
Co-Chairs,
Carol Sherman
