Rotarians in Action at St. Angela Merici Parish

On Wednesday, September 8, several Rotarians volunteered to help pack pencil boxes filled with supplies for Parish CCD students. These kits will allow each child to have their own items to keep at the parish, so they are ready to learn when they come to class. The individual kits also allow students to minimize the sharing of supplies to help with sanitation during the pandemic. The kits were presented to St. Angela Merici Parish leaders on Sept. 22.

This Week's Meeting

Co-presenters Joyce Loychik and Melicia White of COMPASS Family & Community Services will discuss disability in the workplace, both in terms of etiquette and requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Loychik has worked for Compass for 32 years. As Employment Outreach Coordinator, she has worked directly and indirectly with persons who have some barriers and want and need vocational guidance, counseling, and support to achieve success in the workforce.  She has used her skills of teaching, mentoring, and motivating clientele and staff to identify strengths in others while exuding her positivity and tireless energy that encouraged others to work hard and succeed.

Loychik earned a Bachelor of Science in Education at Bowling Green State University and a Master of Science in Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling at Kent State University. As she transitions to part-time employment, she is seeking service-related opportunities that will build upon her skill sets and help her to achieve her personal goals. Originally from Brookfield, she and her husband moved a few years ago from Cortland to Poland.  In addition to her career, she enjoys scuba diving and snow skiing and teaches water aerobics.

White, an employment specialist and 14-year employee of Compass, guides individuals of all ages and abilities to overcome challenges and achieve their employment and education goals. She has used her calming reassurance to help others weather storms and rebuild using perseverance and organization. Her clientele includes persons with severe and persistent mental illness, chronically homeless persons, and individuals who experience psychosis for the first time.

She graduated from Chatham University with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a minor in Multicultural Studies.  She is a lifelong resident of Youngstown. A parent to 2 fantastic children, she and her husband are guiding them to independence and successful careers.  She also enjoys sewing, exercising, reading, watching action movies and solving puzzles.

Last Week's Meeting

SMARTS

Rotarians took a field trip to SMARTS Art School, which is led by RCY Past President Becky Keck. Rotarians are well acquainted with SMARTS, but Keck and her colleagues explained adjustments they’ve made during the COVID-19 pandemic to provide virtual and in-person arts instruction to 1,500 children in Ohio and Pennsylvania, from pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade.

SMARTS instructors are augmenting music, art and theater education in local schools. Examples include The Montessori School of the Mahoning Valley, which will stage a musical later in the school year in conjunction with SMARTS and using the SMARTS stage in its downtown Youngstown location. Rotarian Paul Garchar, CEO of Potential Development schools for persons on the autism spectrum, explained how working with SMARTS helps his staff to provide meaningful experiences to students.

SMARTS classes for children are free and open to the public, thanks to ongoing community support. Rotarians can lend support by attending the SMARTS Family Dinner, which will be Nov. 18 at Stambaugh Auditorium. SMARTS students will share their talents, and the meal will be served family style. See Becky for ticket information. The Art for SMARTS fundraiser, featuring an art auction, is being planned for April 29, 2022.

The meeting ended with guided tours of the facility and many friendly conversations.

RI Focus on New Generation Service Exchange Program
The Rotary New Generations Service Exchange is a short-term, customizable program combining their professional goals with a humanitarian project. It is targeted to university students and young employees (ages 18-30). The goals is to provide the opportunity to experience new cultures and career opportunities through the lens of a different culture, planting the seeds for a lifetime of international understanding. The program has two options:

1) Non-Paid, Non-Academic Internships

These are normally exchanges for individuals. The duration of the exchange is regulated by local laws and visa requirements. The exchange shall not be longer than the limitations of the tourist visas. The participants stay in host families who provide appropriate room and board. A workplace has to be arranged before the exchange begins.

2) Group Exchanges

These exchanges vary from four to six weeks. Groups normally include six to ten participants. These may be from the same vocational or educational areas. The participants stay with host families who provide room and board at no cost. During their stay, the participants get practical exposure to their educational or vocational field.
