This Week's Speaker

World Polio Day information and Pints Vs. Polio

Last Week's Speaker

Barb Ewing, CEO of Youngstown Business Incubator (YBI), is used to being asked “so what is it that YBI does?” It is, in fact, the most-asked question that she gets.

YBI is an economic development organization, which means they promote long-term, sustainable employment opportunities by facilitating the creation of high-value businesses through collaborative partnerships focusing on information technology and additive manufacturing. YBI is currently transitioning to identifying the needs and problems in the community, and supporting the adoption of new technologies in additive manufacturing to make the industry more competitive.

Initially focused on building companies in technology and software development, YBI is now much more diverse, with more emphasis on additive manufacturing than digital software. In the last five years, their model has shifted to entrepreneurship in any form. The Women in Entrepreneurship program creates economic opportunities for women through education and training, while the Youth Entrepreneurship program creates opportunities for youth ages 9 – 18. Programs are also available for veterans, the economically disadvantaged, and minority women.

Community Grant Program

While RCY leads the way in addressing needs within our community, this club also supports the good works of other local problem-solvers. Thus, the Youngstown Rotary Foundation has opened the 2021-2022 Community Grant Program. Applications will be accepted through Dec. 15 from nonprofit organizations that positively impact Youngstown in ways that connect with Rotary’s Seven Areas of Focus. The guidelines and application can be found here and here. Rotarians are encouraged to circulate this information.

Rotary Magazine - October

Rotary magazine this month celebrates our success in eliminating polio world wide and encourages us to reach the finish line. As President Shekhar Mehta reminds us, Oct. 24 is not only World Polio Day, but part of Community Economic Development Month.

Sadly, it is not just third world countries in which the work of Rotary is needed to provide clean drinking water and adequate sanitation. Our country also badly needs our help and attention. “Five water and sanitation problems that could be lurking in your own backyard” include: Alaska’s difficulties in providing water to rural Alaska ($2 billion needed to address problems); Chicago’s lead pipe problem ($10 billion to fix); PFAS that are now so prevalent that 100 percent of 639 children tested had PFAS in their bloodstream; “Usable but not drinkable water in West Virginia”; and “The threat lurking beneath Miami’s lawns.” And what of our local community’s water and sanitation problems?

The opportunities for Rotary to serve seem overwhelming at times. That is why we need to celebrate our successes to give us hope as we take on new projects.

RI Focus on New Generation Service Exchange Program
The Rotary New Generations Service Exchange is a short-term, customizable program combining their professional goals with a humanitarian project. It is targeted to university students and young employees (ages 18-30). The goals is to provide the opportunity to experience new cultures and career opportunities through the lens of a different culture, planting the seeds for a lifetime of international understanding. The program has two options:
1) Non-Paid, Non-Academic Internships.

These are normally exchanges for individuals. The duration of the exchange is regulated by local laws and visa requirements. The exchange shall not be longer than the limitations of the tourist visas. The participants stay in host families who provide appropriate room and board. A workplace has to be arranged before the exchange begins.

2) Group Exchanges

These exchanges vary from four to six weeks. Groups normally include six to ten participants. These may be from the same vocational or educational areas. The participants stay with host families who provide room and board at no cost. During their stay, the participants get practical exposure to their educational or vocational field.
