Last Week's Meeting

RCY Meeting
July 28, 2021
Wick Park Pavilion
Rotarians looked back and ahead while discussing the Rotary Groundhog Craft Beerfest.
The third annual event was postponed from early February to mid July because of COVID-19. It was held at Stambaugh Auditorium, as usual, but in the parking lot instead of the ballroom. Event co-chairs Dave Stillwagon and club President Josh Prest say the event was a success, despite the challenges of hosting a social event during a pandemic.
The Stambaugh parking lot on Ford Avenue was an “enormous space” to fill, Stillwagon said, and yet provided plenty of room for social distancing. Attendees walked amid brewers, food trucks, a Mahoning Matters community news source tent, and a stage for live musical entertainment.
A final financial report is forthcoming. In addition to RCY members who volunteered at Beerfest, Stillwagon recognized the Boardman Rotarians who poured beer and gave additional support, as well as event sponsors and the Stambaugh Auditorium staff.
Beerfest will return on Jan. 29, 2022, with Kevin Chiu and Samantha Turner as event co-chairs.
Beerfest proceeds support RCY’s local grantmaking program.
Cheers to all!
In other news, Bonnie Deutsch Burdman received her round badge for having successfully completed requirements of new members.
Samantha Turner asked for volunteers on Thursday, Aug. 5, when children in the City Summer Camp program will gather at the Wick Park Pavilion for a picnic. Rotarians are needed from 1 to 3 p.m. to hand out books to campers and serve as mentors.

New Membership Tool

LinkedIn has become a powerful social media tool for growing your personal professional network, enhancing your brand, and building meaningful business relationships. Did you know that the platform also provides an excellent opportunity for attracting new Rotarians?

By its design, LinkedIn offers a make-sense tool for professionals wishing to establish networks with existing colleagues and new contacts.  Your network makes a statement about you -- who you do business with, who you hang with and what's important to you. If they see that #serviceaboveself is important to you, they just might approach you to explore membership opportunities.

Let's all do our part to bring people to the Club that represent our shared values by taking these steps:
With your help, 100+ years of community service can be matched with 100 engaged Rotarians!

Call to Action -- Operation Warm
President Josh Prest has set a fundraising goal of $30,000 to provide winter coats to city students. Past President Dave Stillwagon says coats must be ordered by the end of September to receive them in time for distribution in November.
Coats cost $20 each. Each Rotarian is being asked to contribute or raise $100 this month. Gifts may be made in honor or memory of persons; memorial cards will be available at weekly meetings.
Watch for details about coat distribution activities

FUNDRAISING ALERT

When Boscov's opens a new department store, the company invites local charities to sell tickets to a special event prior to the grand opening for ticket holders only.  The best part is that the charities sell the shopping passes for $5 and keep 100 percent of profits.
Rotary Club of Youngstown has 250 tickets to sell before the new Boscov’s in the Eastwood Mall opens in October. Packs of 10 tickets are available to Rotarians; see Scott Schulick.
The new Boscov's will be a 180,000 square foot store, in the style of the department stores of days gone by, including a candy counter, sales staff on the floor, and wide product selections.
Sell passes to your co-workers, or buy them for family and friends who will enjoy a sneak peak before the store opens to the public.
