This month Rotary International has asked us to focus on the impact we can make on the wealth and growth of our community. Explore this topic with us at our meeting Wednesday at noon at MVR
July 7 was an historic day for the Rotary Club of Youngstown, as Josh Prest was sworn in as President for the 2021-22 year. At 30 years old, Josh is the youngest president in the club’s 106-year history. District Governor Steve Wilder of North Canton presided at the ceremony, with President Josh’s family, co-workers and Rotary friends in attendance at the Wick Park Pavilion.
Following Rotary International’s theme of “Serve to Change Lives,” President Josh said a priority during his term will be supporting returning citizens after incarceration, addiction or other life-impacting events. He also challenged member Elayne Bozick, chair of the club’s Operation Pollination committee, to engage 10 other clubs into creating habitats for pollinating insects to improve environmental and human physical health.
President Josh, a graduate of Boardman High School and Youngstown State University, is a regional representative for U.S. Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio. His enjoyment of magic tricks – he’s been known to perform a few of his own – prompted him to conclude his inaugural remarks by yielding the floor to comic/magician Michael Dustman. Rotarian and past President Dave Stillwagon was selected to participate in Dustman’s show at President Josh’s request. How did the same $100 bill get from Dave’s hand to the inside of a whole lemon? Don’t ask Dave.
Congratulations to President Josh!
Weekly luncheon meetings will take place at the Wick Park Pavilion, with food prepared by Jeff Chrystal Catering. Rotarians are strongly encouraged to bring guests to weekly meetings.
Pat Kerrigan and Steve Kristan will lead a presentation on Emergency Broadband Benefits.

Peace Center Africa
Rotary has established a new peace center in Kampala, Uganda, and the article—“Africa’s Agents of Change”—introduces us to the 15 Rotary fellows who come from 11 countries of Africa. You must read to learn of these amazing individuals. One example is Paul Mushaho, who co-founded a Rotary club in the refugee settlement in Nakivale, Africa. “In 2018, Mushaho was invited to the United Nations Africa headquarters in Nairobi, where he was honored as one of six Rotary People of Action: Young Innovators.” For information on applying for 2023-2024 peace fellowship and identification of Rotary Peace Centers go to rotary.org/peace-fellowships.
THIS WEEK IN ROTARY HISTORY
July 13, 1993: Rotary Club of Youngstown Inherited 18 burial plots at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Boardman. The Club donated them to the local hospitals, Salvation Army, Hospice and the Rescue Mission.
"As we move into a new Rotary year, as I think back on the past two years the word that comes to mind is appreciation. To all who allowed me to be part of their Rotary family, I’m thankful. At this challenging time for our members, our organization, our communities, and our families, I can’t imagine anyone more capable to hand the baton to than RID Elizabeth Usovicz. I look forward to our paths crossing in whatever new role or assignment is in store for each of us." Read his whole letter here
